Stuffed up again?

When you've failed so many times that you've lost count.
The shame of it. The self-disgust. What do you do?
Stay down and wallow in your self-pity or get up and try again?

Imagine a man sentenced to death for a heinous crime. He did the deed. There's no denying it. He's been proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt. "Have mercy, have mercy!", he wails. But its no use. He committed the crime and the law demands his life in return. Think of the desperation. The long sleepless nights before his execution. Think of the grieving family.

Now imagine, just as this guilty man walks out to the gallows in front of all his family and friends, the King pardons his crime and sets him free. From the mouth of the grave this guilty man is saved. Not because the law changed. But because the price of his crime was paid by another. The life of the King's one and only Son. Can you imagine the elation? The freedom? The heaviness that dogged his entire body being lifted? Think of the joy. Think of the eternal gratitude.

This is amazing grace. And the good news is, it's available to us all. We just have to receive this gift by faith. Yet what is faith? It's the confident assurance that what we hope for will happen. It's the evidence of things unseen. Faith can move mountains. Faith can change your life.

So whatever you've done or whoever you've disappointed, have faith. God's grace is enough. It's more than you need. Get up. Dust yourself off. Try again.

... as we know it. But do you feel fine?

It's a pretty gloomy outlook if you focus on the negatives: European sovereign debt crisis, Mayan calendar heralding the apocalyptic end, venal government officials perverting justice, or more pressingly, not being able to find insect spray to exterminate that annoying family of roaches living in your apartment? Just saying.

But we soldier on. Despite the crap and uncertainty, we hope. Heck, our resolutions for a leaner, healthier, and more disciplined future are based on hope. Why? Because staying still and waiting for the end is really just existing and not living isn't it? How boring.

They say you should only work on one resolution at a time if you want to succeed. Clearly a rule for under-achievers, I've decided to focus my efforts on five: develop intimacy with God, get fit, get to stuff on time, save money, and learn the acoustic guitar to become a YouTube sensation. Yeah, you heard me.

Man, I live on hope. Not because I'm deluded and naive (which may or may not be true depending on who you ask) but because it injects purpose and passion into my bones. It makes me strive for a better life. It makes me wanna wake up in the morning. Hope continues forever. Without it, we're really just restless zombies. We're just dead.

Have you ever thought about it?

I'm not talking about buying milk or band-aids or superglue to repair your vintage Ray-Ban Clubmasters you hipster. It's pretty clear that you're meeting some tangible and practical need there.

I'm talking about a beautiful pair of double monk strap shoes from Church's, a hand-painted piece of art from Goyard or a stunning automatic watch from IWC. You know, the "wants" rather than the "needs".

But when you think about it, it kinda is filling some "need" isn't it?
The "need" to reward yourself.
The "need" to be up with the latest trends.
The "need" to buy quality and craftsmanship.
The "need" to distinguish yourself and create your own persona.
The "need" to show the world that you've "made it" or you have "good taste".

Clearly this list is not exhaustive. But clearly, however you phrase it ... aren't all these "needs" just different ways of validating ourselves? Aren't they all different ways of loving yourself?

As humans (warning: emotional discourse imminent) we all need to be loved. And when we buy beautiful things its because we are filling this love "need". Think about it. I'm not saying that just because you buy luxury goods you're this love devoid junkie; just that shiny overpriced and immaculately wrapped goods dispensed in glistening glass and marble boutiques are your drug. It's your vice and you're addicted. Guilty. Hey, at least its not illicit or illegal right?

The funny thing is, like any drug, you'll feel good for a while but soon you're out "window-shopping" or surfing the online shops for your next hit. It doesn't last.

We're a complicated bunch us humans. I don't think buying beautiful things is bad (I mean, it's soooo beautiful) just as long as we recognize it's not a substitute for the real thing ... meaningful relationships.

I haven't had the time to wander the streets this month I'm sorry.
So, since I've never turned the camera on myself, I thought I'd feature a few of my favourite things instead. Okay, not the same, but almost ...

Home bound for four entire days due to an impacted wisdom tooth extraction - hang on, can I just say that this was alarmingly barbaric in nature. We're in the 21st century people, yet dentists still use pliers to yank out teeth? Anyway, I digress. With nothing to do except chugging down chicken porridge, I found myself watching the entire season of Downton Abbey (Brilliant! My new favourite show) and Game of Thrones (way too violent and explicit but strangely captivating). Once I exhausted those shows, and checked facebook and gmail for the tenth time, I headed into dangerous territory ... online shopping.

Warning bells sounded but I proceeded anyway. Mr Porter, Oki-ni, Revolve Clothing, Urban Outfitters, ASOS, you name it, I was all over it. But I didn't stop there. A friend was over in Hong Kong for a press junket so I ordered myself a Goyard "pouchette" as well!

Who are you anyway?

Yes, so your business card says "Consultant" or "Marketer" or, once in a confusing jumble of words, "Food Engineer" (do you mean chef?), but they're all just titles with pigeon-holed meanings. I want to know what makes you tick? I want to know what your guilty pleasure is, why you'd sacrifice 400 calories to eat that muffin when you just ran for 45 minutes "to lose weight", and why you'd even think of wearing those clothes outside the house? As Catherine Tate would say, "I'm not trying to be funny or anything, but have you seen what you're wearing?"

Clearly, these answers can only be answered in time. You know, by investing into relationships and "getting to know" one another. But I know what you're thinking ... www.drainer.com/time_consuming; so I propose a quicker method. Grab their bag and have a cheeky gander inside.

And this is exactly what I've done. In my new tropical home, aka Sweaty Singapore (oh, relax ... I love it already) I took a sneak peek into the bags and clutches of my fellow colleagues at August Man Magazine (go get yourself a copy now!*) all in the name of mateship. Eclectic mix, but serious style cats. I feel like I've crossed some imaginary line of personal intimacy and I can't go back. Oh well, one big happy family now!

*If your local supplier of fine publications has erroneously omitted to stock August Man, tell them to order the Singapore version quick smart.

P.S. Many have queried whether August Man refers to the eight month of the year. Well, I did some digging and found out that it refers to the old English meaning of the word "august" which actually means "respected and impressive"; like you're in august company.

I was listening to my cousin practice the piano in Singapore the other day, and although she's brilliant, I thought she sounded rather matter-of-fact. Almost too perfect. When asked what the piece was meant to evoke, or why it was written, she simply shrugged her shoulders and replied bemusedly, "I don't know". What? Isn't music suppose to inspire? Later I found out that she's been practicing the same handful of musical pieces the whole term as they're the ones being examined at the end of the year. Interesting. Apparently the Singaporean education system whips their students into shape by making them practice examination pieces all year long; whether that be music or mathematics.

It is this mentality and focus on efficiency that has made Singapore one of the richest nations in the world. In fact, Singapore boasts the highest number of millionaires per capita. Great, but aren't we missing something here? What about critical thinking, constructively challenging the status quo, creatively pushing the boundaries? What about simply playing the piano with feeling?

Singapore gets full marks for cutting and pasting. Walk down Orchard Road and you'll spot multiple Pradas, Louis Vuittons, Guccis and their ilk sporting their wares. In short, franchises abound. Each store may stock slightly different merchandise, but all in all, if you ignore the Singaporean accent of the shop assistants you could be anywhere in the world.

However, creative hot spots are emerging in this meticulously organized island city state. Embryonic as they may seem, independent local labels and artists in Haji Lane and Ann Siang Hill (just to name a few) are re-defining the Singaporean shopping scene and fueling a growing appetite for design and the arts. It will be this next generation that will elevate Singapore to another level. No longer just a collage of brands, but a more cultured and Singapore-specific shopping experience.

This tiny nation has built enviable economic strength by capitalising on its central South East Asian location and tailoring its policies to attract the brightest minds in the region. Yet, moving forward, it will need to encourage its population to colour outside the lines. Afterall, painting by numbers is boring.

Chapel Street. What does it mean to you?

(c) Boys doing "chap laps" with some heinous sound blasting out of their car windows
(d) Pretentious broads strutting in heels whilst hiding behind dark sunglasses
(e) All of the above

For me. None of the above. All I ever remember is stern self-chastening along the lines of, "why-did-you-drive-down-here-now-you're-stuck-behind-a-tram-stopping-every-10-metres-with-no-chance-to-overtake-you-fool!" That and, "Oh, wouldn't it be cool if the Jam Factory was still a jam factory?"

I digress.

If you haven't been reading your papers or watching the news or simply haven't noticed the fact that everyone is still on sale, then here's an update: we are in the midst of what is being heralded as the worst trading conditions for the Australian retail sector in the last 20 years. Borders and Colorado have gone bust, David Jones reported a record sales slump, and Just Group just announced that it may shut 50 stores if conditions don't change - there is no doubt the Australian retailer is struggling in a climate of increased competition (think the introduction of Zara and growing popularity of online shopping) and increased consumer frugality. Saving is the new black.

So, in light of all this doom and gloom, I decided to take a leisurely stroll down one of Australia's "premium shopping destinations" to ask the locals what exactly is it that the Australian retail sector needs?

My opinion? A re-focusing on craftsmanship. Quality basics done well. Emphasis on a range that enhances personal style rather than following the flippant tides of fashion. Someone invest in me already!

Whatever it is, don't you think it's time you started living the life you've always wanted? Okay, so that's a line from Lighthouse Family's little ditty, "High", but doesn't it get you thinking?

Procrastinators are not the leaders of tomorrow people. Sitting on your arse waiting for things to change will only get you a bad bodyfat to muscle ratio, and that as we know friends, is so not hot right now.

So in keeping with this renewed sense of rigor and purpose, I decided to stop sitting on blog posts that I've been keeping at bay because I needed "one more photo" and just upload them all!

MM: Hey, I'm off to Singapore for a couple of weeks.
Friend: Wow, make sure you don't get "Schapelle'd".
MM: What?
Friend: "Schapelle'd"! You know, jailed for life for drug possession.
MM: Three things.
First, Schapelle Corby is in Indonesia.
Second, I think Singapore has the death sentence for drug possession.
Third, I don't do drugs you fool!
Friend: Umm, then what do you call this tub of white powder?!
MM: Oh. That's the American Crew Boost Powder that you sprinkle in your hair for texture, volume and hold. It's totally new.
Friend: As if. Good luck explaining that to the sniffer dogs.

See, contrary to popular belief, there are disadvantages to being an "early adopter" of new trends and products. Well, besides the risk of being "Schapelle'd" in Singapore, I also remember the painful exercise of continually explaining to friends back in 2008 that rolled up chinos with boat shoes are totally cool and, no, I am not about to go fishing or board a yacht. Now that everyone from ASOS to Big W are selling boat shoes for $20 a pair, you know its time to move right along.

Anyway, if you were wondering, I made it into Singapore without any hassles. It was hot, it was sticky, and I was forced to speak Sing-lish to make myself understandable. Here's a sample of locals with their advice of what to see and do, and their definition of "Singaporean Style".

"Singaporean style is not that unique."

MM: I think the Singaporean emphasis on WROTE learning in schools and the focus on efficiency in business might have stifled creativity in its populous to a certain extent, but we are starting to see a growing presence of cult brands and emerging local artists. In any case, Adeline recommends the whole stretch of Orchard Road for shopping with special mention of Ion (impressive smattering of almost every luxury brand under the Sun) and Mandarin Gallery (which has some unique boutiques).

MM: A bold man with many ideas, Jason has just started his own branding and marketing company, ACRE, and recommends Haji Lane for the indie fashion scene.

Just like that it's all over red rover. They came, they twirled, they drank low-calorie energy drinks, they partied, and they left. The Loreal Melbourne Fashion Festival blew into town and then left a trail of uneaten carbs and natty free samples from all those VIP show bags handed out at all those fashion catwalks. Loreal Men Expert eye roll-on de-puffer and dark circle remover, who knew you'd be so useful?

Anyway, in keeping with the larger, fancier, dearer and a million times more glamorous catwalks in the Northern Hemisphere (you know, the ones where the designers actually come out after each show to give their obligatory wave to the audience) I decided to attend a few catwalk shows to capture the style of some interesting fashion attendees. That's right, people like you and me. Like ants to a drop of honey, or more fittingly, like pubescent teens gathering excitedly for their high school prom, the Docklands was awash with stylish folk from all corners of Melbourne and beyond. Snap.

To make things appear informative and relatively insightful, I asked each person photographed below to define or describe "Australian style". Oh, that elusive white elephant! Okay, enough with my mindless banter and straight to the photos.

Kylie, 25 / Podiatrist

"I think it's pretty relaxed. Fashion-forward but still relaxed at the same time."

MM: Simple and elegant with a contrasting black and white clutch. Less is always more, and given that its a fashion event, there are always a lot of people over-dressing. Okay, myself included. I wanted to stand out, but with so many show ponies strutting around, I ended up blending in! Boring.

"We're catching up slowly and yet quite niche. When it's good fashion, its actually really good. For example, Dion Lee has exploded internationally because it was picked up by Jak and Jil Blog and then Style Bubble. It's really cool."

MM: No doubt interesting in their own right, but there's something about all three of them standing together that makes their outfits more appealing. It's the red dress complemented by Mia's red shoes, the different hairstyles and head wear, and the contrast of the boxy handbags against the soft leather clutch. Talk about bringing out the best in your friends.

"Australian style is unique and totally different. Sometimes its really bad and sometimes it blows your mind."

MM: Naturally, Mr Boon knows how to make a statement. Red accents, bow tie, and a well cut blazer. Boys, be brave and express yourself. Don't go for second best baby.

"It's amazing walking down a main street in Melbourne 'cos you never feel too dressed up. It's eclectic and there's a lot of black, but you never feel too dressed up. It's amazing."

MM: Just moved over Auckland, Robecca is trying to get an independent label off the ground that recycles vintage clothing. Decked out in black, she's already adopted the local uniform wholeheartedly. Bless.

"Fun and fearless. Willing to try anything. Lot of leg and a lot of skin."

MM: They say leopard print is the quintessential feminine print just like how camo is the quintessential male print. Coincidentally, both are trending right now so ladies go raid an op shop and boys pop into your local army suppliers? Hmmm ... small doses with the camo boys.

"Australian style is experimental. We are not bound to particular rules perhaps because we are an island country far from anyone else. Ultimately though, I think we are relaxed, practical and bloody cheeky!"

MM: I think Diana has just described her own style. Always unique and personalized, her look is never over-worked but still multi-faceted through simple details. Cheeky? Just start a conversation.

"Australian fashion is heavily commercial. Successfully commercial."

MM: Me thinks that is a Billykirk bag hand-made by Amish workers in the USA! Quality. Daniel also told me that elements of 60s fashion is due for a comeback. Keep your eyes peeled.

"Seems to be vintage inspired with at least one kooky piece or laid back glam rock with at least one fierce piece to balance it out. Either way there's always some skin involved and everyone always tries to put their own spin on things. We're being influenced quite heavily by European style which particularly great for Melbourne!"

MM: To use her description of Australian style, I think Jo here is "laid back glam rock with at least one fierce piece". Then again, everything that she is wearing is on trend and "fierce"! Tan trench, statement jewelery and leopard print shoes. Pick one.

"Australian style is personal, each to their own. It's what really empowers a person".

MM: Black leather is ubiquitous and forget the "leather-look" knock-offs. Invest in a real leather jacket, and if you're game, opt for brown. Meanwhile, have you noticed Christina's awesome leather bag and yellow sandals? Leather it up baby.

Giang Cao, 21 / Streetstyle Photographer

"Australian style has a lot to do with the natural sexiness and natural down to earth elegance that all the cool girls have down here, and it's very unique to Australia."

MM: Giang Cao's blog, Through The Looking Glass, captures the street style of Melbournians is simply top shelf. He believes that fashion blogs will continue to evolve into something more involved. It's not necessary blog versus print, but a dichotomy between content that will evolve naturally and both will remain influential for the foreseeable future.

Samantha, 29 / Designer of Bento

"Different cities have different forms of style. Melbourne is all about creating individual concepts of style and dressing more to suit body shapes. Whereas Sydney is more fashion forward and dressing more to meet a trend rather than anything. I don't think one is better than the other; it's just different. I'm originally from Perth, and they are more laid back and I think they dress more 'appropriately'. People in the West will dress for individual occasions rather than style an entire outfit like they do here in the East irrespective of where they're going."

MM: This time last year Samantha quit her job in senior management at a bank to start her label Bento. Wow. Go you good thing! She says that on good days, her career switch can be inspirational, but on bad days, it just seems insane. Samantha's dress is from Bento and her label is about classic and clean wardrobe staples that you can style whichever way you like.

"Australian style is incredibly varied. There are a lot of different cultures that come together here ... and I think that is mirrored in fashion."

MM: Camel. Without doubt the dominant "in" colour for the season. Get a coat, and get it in camel.

"City is very fashionable and Melbourne is very black, but broadly Australia is very different to each other. Brisbane has its unique style and Melbourne has its unique style."

MM: Would you have picked that they were both students? Carrying loads of funk and personality, these sisters were proudly showing off their textured gillets. Apparently plaid gillets are going to massive for guys next winter. Think hunting.

"Australian style is practical and multicultural. From Britten this season is referencing the future from the past. It's as if you're in the 1920s looking into the future. We've drawn inspiration from movies like Gattaca and included some industrial references to our collection."

MM: Alex and I were being pestered by security to leave the Menswear runway when I was taking this picture, but Alex was like, "Don't worry, I'm one of the designers that just showed on this catwalk so they'll just have to deal with it". Haha! Grand.

Jessica, 21 / Assistant Project Manager

"Australian style is big in variety, but Melbourne style is pure class and timeless."

MM: People come up to me and say, "How come all your cousins are so stylish?". It's because I taught them well obviously. That, and the fact that it's in our genes. Such a silly question.

"Very eclectic but I don't think it takes enough risks. It's stuck in a pretty severe colour palette, and I probably fall victim to that at times, but I wouldn't mind seeing it get a bit more exciting."

MM: Clea believes that the introduction of global retailers like Zara into the Australian market will force local retailers to really up their game. She notes that local labels have historically emphasized communication and marketing but they will need to go back to step one and focus more on delivering a quality product. Totally agree. Raise the bar or go under.

Mention New Zealand and immediately people think of Lord of The Rings or the staggering hordes of sheep that dominate the landscape. Counting sheep is not what Kiwis do when they are trying to fall asleep, it's what they do on the farms when they've woken up. Tragic but true.

However, this beautiful land of the "long white cloud" (which is an English translation of the Maori word for New Zealand, Aotearoa) is also home to the "Adventure Capital of the World". That's right, international resort destination, Queenstown.

Queenstown / New Zealand

Located on the south island, this little cracker of a town balances the charm of a hospitable small community with the convenience of world-class facilities and services. Now, before you roll your eyes and dismiss it's "adventure" title as just some vacuous and verbose marketing tag line, consider this ...

Queenstown is the birthplace of the modern bungy, provides access to 2 out of the top 5 hiking trails in the world (Milford Track and Routeburn Track), boasts pristine waterways for whitewater rafting, jet boating and kayaking, and is the base for 3 different ski resorts including The Remarkables (pictured above) which is one of only two mountain ranges in the World that runs directly North-South.

If all that outdoor activity sounds too productive for you, chillax, it's also the perfect place to just sit back and soak in the breathtaking views. Coffee in hand, favourite magazine open on your lap, and the majesty of Lake Wakatipu before you. A-ma-zing.

I was lucky enough to spend a long weekend in Queenstown recently, and with my trusty Leica X1 in hand, I bring you my snapshots of the diverse and very international folk of Queenstown.

I was mulling about the information centre on Shotover Street when I saw Cody saunter by, messed up bed hair, hands in pockets and feet stuffed into boat shoes like slippers. Did someone just wake up? Notes scrolled on the back of his hands in blue ink and displaying the unmistakable confident swagger of an American, this guy was disheveled but cool.

Cody arrived into town the night before, hit the bars, and just before this picture was taken, had Bungy-jumped 134 metres into the Nevis River (officially New Zealand's highest Bungy).

Michelle, 41 / Owner of Vudu Cafe & Larder

Hands down, Vudu Cafe & Larder is the best place in Queenstown for great coffee and quality food. Located on 16 Rees Street, this cafe boasts a waterfront location, chic retro interior and the loyal following of the town residents.

Only opened since July 2010, Michelle drew inspiration from Melbourne cafes when designing the look and feel of Vudu. Well, as we all know, Melbourne is the culture capital of the Southern Hemisphere so this comes as no surprise really! She loves that Queenstown is a small place but with big city conveniences like an international airport, and she recommends a stroll up Queenstown Hill for a beautiful view of the whole area.

Hearty and delicious. What more do you want? Everything is plated beautifully and the smorgasbord of cakes, quiches, salads and pastries in the glass food counter begs for seconds. Attracting a cosmopolitan and hip crowd who love to read the paper all day long, get there early to secure good seats.

Hailing from Sydney, Alex is in town for her brother's wedding and was making her way back to her hotel along the stunning coast of Lake Wakatipu (New Zealand's longest lake) when I took this picture.

Not her first time to Queenstown, she recommends that visitors go hiking in summer and ski down the slopes come winter to fully capitalise on the town's greatest asset; it's stunning view.

Shotaro is from Japan and has come to Queenstown with his friend to go bungy jumping, but upon arrival, realised that they didn't have enough money. Oh, those crazy Japanese.

Although there was a bit of language barrier, he understood the words "fashion" and "blog" and was all too happy to oblige. The Japanese do have a way with their fashion, and I reckon if he wasn't on holidays, we'd really get to see his personal style in action.

Onsen Hot Pools / Queenstown

Voted as the number one attraction in Queenstown on tripadvisor.com (and rightly so) the Onsen Hot Pools was the highlight of my short New Zealand experience.

Located just a short 10 minute drive from the town centre, these private onsen hot pools are filled with mountain spring water and can accommodate up to 4 people. With a touch of a button, you can add cold water, turn on the water jets or retract the glass windows and be outdoors (as pictured). This place was magical in summer, but just imagine it in winter with snow on the mountain and ice lining the river below. Simply a must-do the next time you're in this part of the world.

Tucked in a side street with a discreet entrance and metres away from bustling cafés frequented by hipsters juggling their lattes and iPhones, you’ll find the charming and deceptively large Gilligan Grant Gallery. Coffee, culture and art all in the same block? Melbourne, this is why we love you.

Established in 2007, this commercial gallery is headed up by art directors Therese Gilligan and Philip Grant. I had the opportunity to visit this nifty little space for the opening night of "White Line Fever", an exhibition exploring the turbulent lives of sport stars in Australia by local artist Andrew Gordon.

Viewing the collection with the aid of Andrew's personal commentary, I was reminded that these sporting "heroes" are just ordinary people who have accomplished extraordinary things. The heady cocktail of adoring fans, pressure to perform and the arrogance of youth is a dangerous elixir.

My favourite is the above painting of Aboriginal youths being introduced to AFL - anonymous kids enduring the cultural difficulties of leaving their local communities for the so-called promise land of fame and fortune; but at what price?

White Line Fever is currently showing at Gilligan Grant Gallery until 5 March 2011.

Therese explains that the Gallery tends to display the works of local artists in their 20s or 30s that have a contemporary feel to it; that is, "something made in the times we live in, something that talks to us about where the artist is at that particualr point in time and how they see the society at that particular point in time."

Philip Grant / Art Director

Philip describes art simply and aptly as ... Emotion. The visual stimulation of emotion.

He states that there is a current backlash against the predominance of post-modern art which has long heralded the supposed wisdom of no absolute truth (ironically, itself an absolute truth). Good art is now art that is personal and involves the personal journey of the artist. It is a refocus on authenticity rather than the cold detachment of post-modern theory.

In examining any artwork, he suggests 4 analytical perspectives:

1. Visual: Objective description of the style, techniques and medium used. For example, what colours, textures, strokes and patterns do I see?

2. Personal: Subjective effect of the art on the viewer and emotive intent of the artist. For example, what is the artist telling me and what do I feel when I view this art?

3. Cultural: Context of the artwork. For example, when was the artwork created and how does the culture of that place and time affect the way we interpret the piece?

4. Post-modern: Only applicable to modern art post 1970s. For example, what are the post-modern elements or interpretations applicable to the artwork?

Are these different points of analysis applicable to fashion? Is there a connection between art and fashion? I turned my camera to the eclectic crowd of art lovers and berated them as much.

I kept calling her "Minka" the whole night, she must of thought I was the biggest bore. What is with me and my inability to articulate simple English words? Ethnic upbringing? Hole-In-One.

Minna (not Minka) describes her style as a mix of Madona and Marcia Brady. Loving the hair, belayage with a twist.

"Art is visual and way you present yourself is also visual, so fashion is like art as it is a visual expression of your emotions and your thoughts."

Mel knows the artist Andrew Gordon and brought her friends along for some wine and free cheese. Oh hang on, that was me who brought friends for the free feed. Guilty. Anyway, this happy trio brought some much needed colour to the grey palette of gallery goers that opening night.

Mika describes her style as "cheap, hand-me-downs and colourful", Mel describes hers as "thrown together", whilst Tibu on the right just puts on clothes as a societal need to "cover myself".

Another friend of the artist, Chris used to play football when he was younger, and as such, has some context and connection to "White Line Fever".

What caught my eye was the unique collar on this gent's shirt. Upon further inspection I learned that he designed it himself and had it made in Cambodia.

"I suppose there is a connection between fashion and art, but I couldn't say yes or no."

Australian Open

The tennis can be summed up in one word, hot.
Hot sun, hot shots, hot bodies. Am I right or am I right?

I'm also known to get a little hot-tempered when the queue for the men's bathroom is as long as the ladies or when a simple chicken sandwich falls on the wrong side of $10. Daylight robbery. Next year, I'm opening up a pop-up sandwich bar on Glam Slam Oval. Point is, everyone is so focused on what is happening on the court and what the players are wearing (Nike even held a party before the tournament to celebrate and launch Sharapova's new dress) that we often ignore our fellow revellers and tennis fanatics in the crowd. Can't blame you really, most of them are in board shorts, singlets and thongs owing to the scorching summer heat, but look a little closer and you'll find a few gems.

Focusing more on details, here's what I found in my intermittent breaks between matches. Also, the heat was too stifling and matches too exciting for me to walk around for ages. Pass me my slushie and my "Super Shot" banner.

A good sense of humour, great style, and an athletic build.

Lists. We all have them. Whether it'd be for your life partner or your next penthouse apartment in New York (Hang on … what? You don’t have an apartment in Manhattan?! You are so not keeping up with the Kardashians) we all have lists as a useful way to tick off our criteria. However, if you sat down and thought about your lists, you'd be amazed at how many items are actually superficial and materialistic.

Here's some food for thought: A Hermès crocodile "Birkin" bag is handmade by French leather artisans and a Tiffany's diamond engagement ring takes a million years to form, but these things will mean absolutely nothing when the Earth is burned to smithereens by the cataclysmic explosion of our sun in about 500 billion years time, igniting our solar system in a galactic symphony of gas and burnt charred bits. A lot of burnt charred bits actually. Oh relax, it's like 500 billion years away! Point is, only Faith, Hope and Love continue forever and the greatest of these is Love. Only your relationship with God and each other will remain. To me, this sounds like the perfect reason not to buy any Christmas presents and just give each member of my family a massive hug. Awww, hugs.

You’ve guessed it; it’s the most marvellous time of the year … end of year parties and Christmas functions! It’s time to shed your inhibitions and Zoolander it up in front of your family, friends and work buddies. Christmas is all about giving, so stop hiding that poser inside you and start sharing it in all its glory with the world at large. Deck the function halls and dinner parties with your wardrobe best, flash your "Blue Steel" pout with confidence and … c’mon vogue, let your body move to the music. Just go with the flow.

The piece de resistance is clearly the asymmetric tulle tutu that Liz made herself, and all-in-all it only cost $12. Bargain. Just back from the US of A, Liz quips that overall shorts will be the next big thing to hit our shores. Apparently it’s popping up everywhere in the States at the moment. Fingers on the ready team, get ahead of the curve and start buying up big online.

They're twins but with such different tastes and styles. Love it. Julia (with the red hair on the left) flicked through the pages of a Vogue magazine in preparation for the boat cruise and then bought a dress straight out of page 94 of the current December issue! Fan-freaking-tastic! She is wearing a floral dress by Wheels & Doll Baby and has accessorized it well with fingerless lace gloves and pearl bracelets.

Sam Sparro sang about it and Isabelle is wearing it – Black and Gold. No, it's not ostentatious, it's glamorous. Note awesome gold bling watch, gold ring, and gold buckles on the shoes. If you're blonde, go for it; if you're brunette, stick with sterling silver. Belle’s outfit is all from Guess except her fur wrap-scarf-thingy-a-jig which is from Christopher Chronis.

As people working the fashion industry, I asked them what they thought would be big this upcoming season and they reported “tribal romantic” (think leopard prints) and dark colours (such as dark greens and reds). Personally, you also can’t go wrong with black and a healthy tan. However, all black and no tan? Not hot.

Shorts and a jacket. Boys, get on to it. Zac wanted to wear something worthy of the cruise, and worthy his outfit certainly is. He is wearing a neck scarf to add a bit of rock’n’roll and a wide brim hat to change up the visual proportions. In short, he calls his look “classic Miami gangster” and it's all in the details. Tatts on his chest, ring through his lower lip, braided leather belt, big and black sunnies (everyone, this is an essential so make sure you have at least one pair of plain black shades) and, to top it all off, pushed up sleeves on his jacket. Rakish flair 101. Loving the seersucker jacket and shorts combo (both from Jack London for $399) and his vintage brown leather brogues. Yes, that's right, no one wears socks anymore.

Lenin’s inspiration for his little number is none other than VMAs ranting celebrity Kanye West. Then again, we all know that fashion and practicality don’t always go hand-in-hand. Why, because silk and coke are not friends and in a direct battle your silk suit will lose … big time. Personal experience. What did I learn? Silk – nice to look at, nice to touch, but a nightmare to clean.

Lindel took style notes from Sex and the City (the first movie rather than the second I am told) and has pulled off red carpet glamour in her metallic sequin dress. I know what you're thinking ladies, if you're that good looking whatever you wear will look hot anyway. Well, true. However, Lindel's advice is to carry off whatever you’re wearing with confidence. Ah huh … the X factor. Confidence is always your best accessory people … coke stain on your silk tuxedo or no coke stain.

Affectionately known as “Rah”, we’ve all been rom-mah, rom-mah-mah’ing around her ever since Gaga unleashed “Bad Romance” on to masses over a year ago. Needless to say, she’s loving the attention. Rah is looking resplendent in her black lace dress and shawl collar jacket, but her black painted fingernails hint to a concealed mischievous side. Are you a really a punk rocker with flowers in your hair? Her favourite item is her 1980s leather clutch that was a hand-me -down from her mom and she also loves her shoes which she proudly proclaims is “so 2009!”. Clearly I'm missing something 'cos that just sounds two thousand and late. Okay, okay … I'll love and not hate.

Shelley, 20 / Commercial Dancer

Look at these two. I’m scared and yet drawn to them all at the same time. Certain lyrics of a certain song immediately spring to mind: “Hot and dangerous, if you’re one of us then roll with us … but don’t mess with us, got Jesus on my neck-e-lace, lace, lace”.

Steve is going for the 1950s look but keeping it fresh with an indie haircut. It's all about mixing the old and new. If you just go all old school, then it’s just dress ups really isn’t it and you might as well be wearing a pirate suit or a Spiderman outfit. Important lessons to be learnt here. Take your iPad out and tap away a little note for yourself. Steve’s tip for the upcoming festive party season is to go all out with the theme but be a little different so you’re attracting attention for all the right reasons.

Shells bells is at it again with her fierce Tyra Banks look, but you’d be radiating this fierce confidence too if you’ve just bagged yourself a practically unworn vintage dress from Lismore for just $18. Initially Shelley googled “Vogue” and found pictures of skinny girls with red lipstick and smoking, and she thought to herself “how am I going to pull this look off?!” Well, you’ve done better. Looking good is not synonymous with maxing out your credit card. There is a lesson for me here somewhere.

You shop to satisfy a need or want. Now lets not get confused between what is a “need” and what is a “want”. A“need” is something you require whereas a “want” is something you really really really “need”. Read it again. That’s right, a “want” is more essential than a “need”. For. Sure.

Let me give you an example: I really “need” to get the antenna fixed at home because Channel 10 and ABC are having issues. However, I really “want” a vintage 18 carat gold Patek Phillipe watch with internal movement. Why is the Swiss handcrafted watch a “want” and thus more essential than the "need” of a digital TV antenna? Because if I can’t tell the time how can I watch my favourite TV programs?! See how that works … it’s a no brainer really.

To help distinguish between the often fine line between a “need” and a “want”, I decided to track down some Melbournian shopkeepers to find out: What do we “need” to wear this season? What do they “want” the opposite sex to wear? And so on and so forth…

Here’s the executive summary: Who really cares what the difference is between a “need” and a “want” when all that really matters is that you look good without breaking the bank.

ZOOLOGIE

Bonnita, 30 / Designer

I first stumbled across Zoologie in Manchester Lane when I was dashing around the city during lunch time to suss out the end of financial year sales. Situated in Manchester Lane, the store caught my attention with its colourful window display, and I just couldn’t resist having a gander.

Zoologie is owned, operated and designed by local couple Bonnita and George. The label has been around for 3 years and has grown in popularity in Melbourne (known for its unwavering love affair with black) by unashamedly offering bright colours, interesting fabric combinations, and geometric prints. Bonnita suggests that pants with contrasting checkered cuffs (such as those worn by the mannequin to her right) will be big for Spring as well as jeans with patchwork detailing. It’s the idea of combining different fabrics and textures to create a visual interest. In fact, the pants with contrasting checkered cuffs have been the biggest seller for Zoologie this season. All of the clothes by Zoologie are made in Melbourne, so keep it local people and check out their wares the next time you’re galavanting around town.

COUNTRY ROAD

The top of the tree in terms of the Australian retail market, Country Road has long been synonymous with relaxed Australian style. I couldn’t do a post on shopkeepers without including a brand that has been part of the lives of so many true blue Aussies.

Jenny, 23 / Arts & Law Student

Jenny’s favourite thing about working at Country Road is styling the customers, or in her words, “using them as my doll”. Wow. In her opinion, the best thing about the brand is that there is something for everyone. Whether you are in your 20s or 50s, you can walk into the store and find something that will work for you.

In this picture, Jenny is wearing a chambray shirt from Country Road and her 1950s inspired full circle skirt is actually from the girls range at the store. How ingenious! Ladies, check out the kids section, you might surprise yourself with a size 10 or 12 girl’s skirt. Men, stay away from the boys section. Frank, 24 / Photography Student

Frank loves working at Country Road because of the “fantastic manager”. Chunder. I hope she’s reading this for your sake Frank. Anyway, in all honesty, he likes how you can incorporate anything from Country Road into your wardrobe regardless of your style. In Frank’s case, he likes to match colours and describes his style as street-oriented and neat. His plaid shirt and pants are both from Country Road. For the warmer months, he reckons that boys can’t go wrong with some nice rolled up shorts teamed with a collared shirt and a straw hat. His best tip for young players? Don’t just wear a garment one way; experiment with it and check out blogs online to see how other people are wearing the same thing. Good thinking 99.

ONE-9-ONE (Red Cross Op Shop)

Oi Loon, 19 / RMIT Interior Design Student

One-9-One is an upmarket vintage op shop situated on Bridge Road, Richmond. There are two other branches in Fitzroy and Camberwell and a proportion of the proceeds generated from sales goes towards supporting the Red Cross. One-9-One gets its stock from public donations to the Red Cross, high-level filtering of other second hand stores, and low-cost purchases from chain stores such as Witchery and Country Road.

Shop assistant Oi Loon reckons that you should “need” and “want” some of their vests, summer scarves and retro sunglasses this season. There are plenty of unique and eclectic one-off pieces, and let me tell you from experience, its also great for your penny-pinching mother who likes to nab a fashionable bargain. Oi Loon’s favourite purchase from One-9-One is a leather Oroton bag and she describes her style as a mix match of chain store and op shop garments. In terms of what she “wants” to see on a man? Skinny ties.

Jesse, Around 30 / Store Manager

Thank you Jesus! Before opening up on Flinders Lane, the men of Melbourne were forced to shop online for international brands such as Band of Outsiders, Acne, Common Projects, A.P.C and Oliver Spencer. This multi-brand store is a gold mine for men looking for smart street wear with edge.

Jesse informs me that men this season will “need” to loosen up a little bit more and bring in some sportswear into their sartorial arsenal. Start messing up the neat aesthetic with something a bit sportier such as a cropped windbreaker. However, what he “wants” to see on the ladies is something a little bit more irreverent. Many trends are being pushed by big retailers this season, but Jesse believes that with the growth of online shopping (and as a result, buying garments that don’t fit your body shape perfectly because you didn’t get a chance to try it on), women who are confident with their bodies will start to play more with different proportions and sizes. Hence, there will be a mix match in ladies fashion rather than slavish trend following.

Jesse describes his style as constantly chopping and changing, but he can’t leave the house without wearing some colour – “people look at you all the time and it’s all about colours”. His favourite brand in store is Bank of Outsiders because they make shirts that fit his body shape.

CLAUDE MAUS

Lucianne, 23 / Store Manager

Claude Maus is quintessentially Melbournian – tucked in a lane way and with a penchant for black and grey. Yup, definitely not a Sydney brand.

Lucianne manages the city store located on Manchester Lane and tips me off that garments with mid length calf hem lines will be prominent this season. What about the colour for the season? Beige and neutral tones.

Naturally, she is fully decked out in Claude Maus, but her favourite item is her black flowing cardigan. Can you imagine jumping off a tram with that? It’s like a superhero cape … awesome. Lucianne would like to see guys in closed toe shoes and chinos but is a “bit over people rolling up the hems of their pants”. Hmmm ... given the warmer days ahead, I don't think we've seen the end of that just yet.

They're everywhere. Posing against walls, pirouetting in driveways, and just general flash dance madness through the streets. Spirit fingers here, spirit fingers there. We are besieged by individuals overflowing with energy. Their zest for life and raw talent is inspiring and infectious … it just makes me ... oh, I dunno … “wanna dance with somebody, I wanna feel the heat with somebody!" Whitney, where for art thou?

So in celebration of their mean dance moves and expressive faces (they are also actors people; but granted, very extravagant and highly gesticulated actors like something out of a pantomime), I pointed my camera in their direction to capture their style.

Ariya, 28 / Commercial & Hip Hop

Someone asked Ariya whether she went to Schoolies last year … I’m not surprised. They say “black don’t crack”, well Ariya is proof that “yellow don’t mellow”. Is that racist? No way. It’s a compliment.

Ariya loves to dance because she loves music. Every time she hears a tune she will start choreographing in her mind to tell the story through movement; she enjoys making people “feel the music on another level”. Fittingly, Ariya dresses for comfort (even when she is going out) because she likes to move. Her favourite item today is her Sass & Bide top that she bought at General Pants Co (where she works as a sales assistant). Sass & Bide is also her favourite designer, but because she can’t always afford their garments, she will scout out Asian shops for similar clothes and then try to replicate the look. I’m loving the details in her outfit: leather gloves, spotted tights (purchased on eBay) and lace embellished socks; subtle, but completes the look.

Dean, 20 / Ballet & Jazz

You may think that Dean is posing for this photo, but no, he is actually reacting to a speeding car coming his way … why get off the road when you can just over it? Here here I say. Loaded with hours upon hours of ballet training, this athletic young man is looking calm, cool and collected in one of my favourite Spring looks: canvas shoes, white shorts and a cotton shirt with the sleeves rolled up. Just because you’re wearing shorts doesn’t mean you have to wear a t-shirt or tank top. A long sleeve shirt, even worn with an unlined cotton jacket in the evenings, still keeps you cool whilst looking a little bit dapper. Suave.

Deans says that dancing is all about trying to show off your form, so when choosing his clothes, he likes to pick things that show off the shape of his arms and legs. He generally agrees that dancers dress differently from the general public, but this is most evident with hip hop and commercial dancers because they have an inherent style and look. Ballet dancers, on the other hand, are more mainstream in their dress sense because they don’t have a stereotypical look ascribed to them. Dean’s best tip when it comes to fashion? Be comfortable.

Shelley, 20 / Singer & Commercial Dancer

Fun, extroverted, and hilarious, Shelley definitely gets the good vibes going on with a big dose of warmth and laughter. She describes herself as a “girly hip hop” commercial dancer because she likes to “flick her hair”. Fair enough. Shelley also loves lyrical and contemporary dance, but she apparently “suck[s] at ballet … so can’t do that for a life choice.” Ha ha!! Oh, the honesty.

When it comes to her style, I admire her resourcefulness. Like so many thrifty dancers, she buys basics (from the likes of Portmans and Cotton On) and then dresses it up with creative finds. For example, her favourite item is her white t-shirt with an elephant print that she bought from a store in Chadstone. Tribal prints are coming in people. Shelley also likes to wear tights with big off the shoulder tops because they are easy to dance with. Again, this is another key look for Spring, but think torn acid-wash skinny jeans with over-sized (possibly striped) tops. Good work Shells, good work.

Brendan, 22 / Lyrical Hip Hop

Impressive isn’t he, this stalk-like figure of a man, just balancing there on the tip of his toes. However, Brendan is now lying in a hospital bed somewhere with a fractured foot. No doubt heavily sedated. No doubt flirting outrageously with the nurses. Who would have thought that my simple request for him to back flip off the roof of a car for an awesome mid-air shot would lead to this? What? You believed me? No … I had nothing to do with his little misadventure. Rest up and heal up good Brenno!

Brendan’s favourite item are his Timberland boots which he likes to wear with skinny jeans and a baggy t-shirt, because he says, “I’m not a gangsta, but I like aspects of that world”. He reckons that dancers tend to be bolder and try on clothes that other people wouldn’t due to their inherent creativity and their need to express themselves. Kids, expressing yourself can be dangerous … I mean, Brenno expressed himself and ended up with a broken foot! Some keen expressionist you must be Brenno, some keen expressionist. Okay, back to the clothes: Plaid shirts have been massive recently and will continue to be prominent this Spring but in brighter shades, short sleeves, and also in gingham.

Ashleigh, 20 / Contemporary, Jazz & Cabaret

Dancing since she was just 3 years old, Ashleigh describes her dance style as “girly” and therefore her clothes tend to be more feminine. This is clearly exemplified in the fact that she loves heels. In fact, she loves heels so much that she will even wear them with her PJs to get petrol. Applause. As I always say, dress to impress. Never just get changed into “whatever” in the morning just because you are running late or feeling crap, because after you’ve woken up with a morning coffee or when you bump into that special someone you’ve been secretly stalking on Facebook, you’ll realise that you look like death warmed up and will kick yourself for not making an effort. I call this the “Rude Awakening”, and by the time you have one, it’s already too late to change. Fail.

Needless to say, Ashleigh’s favourite item are her heels that she bought on the Gold Coast because they are “massive and pretty”. She believes that dance is a lot about individuality, so when it comes to picking clothes it is “more than I will thrown something on, but rather, this is who I am.”

IKEA

One of my glass tumblers from IKEA broke. Panic attack. My set of 6 tumblers is now incomplete! Breathe. In and out. In and out. Stop hyperventilating. Life will carry on … who am I kidding!? This is the end of the world as I know it! In a time of crisis, I do what I do best – throw money at the problem. Yup, I stopped everything I was doing (that is, anally scanning my kitchen floor for minute particles of dust and bread crumbs to pick up) and drove straight to the blue monolith that is IKEA just to buy a replacement glass tumbler.

Out of my way children! What is with every yuppie couple and their need to bring their dapper little toddlers to IKEA on Saturdays? Random ankle-biters weaving this way and that. You know what’s worse? Prams. It’s like, hey, let’s play “navigate-the-maze-of-IKEA-showrooms-without-being-hit-or-blocked-by-bulky-and-obstructive-baby-carriers!” Woo hoo! Not. Massive drainer.

Finally, arrive at glass tumbler stack. Inspect glass tumblers. Horror. Cue music: “What about me, it isn’t fair …” Glass tumblers now made in Bulgaria and not Russia. New Bulgarian tumblers are 1 centimeter shorter than older Russian tumblers that I have at home. Typical. The world doesn’t want me to have matching tumblers. Fail, Mutley. Epic fail.

Yet every cloud has a silver lining. In my slow plodding walk out of Sweden’s biggest export, I found some interesting characters and savvy street dressers. Next time you brave IKEA, don’t just check out the furniture, but suss out the shoppers. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Taz, 26 / RMIT Design Student

Just arrived in Australia from China, Taz is here in Melbourne to learn design at RMIT. Oh, very nice. He stood out in the crowd because his sartorial choices are understated but still possessed a little je ne sais quo. Maybe it’s the Beatles hair cut, the black scarf wrapped around his neck like a medical brace, or the faded jeans with the cuffs rolled up? Maybe its the symmetry created by wearing a silver bracelet on each wrist? Whatever it is, the complete look is striking. In this, his first trip to IKEA ever, Taz bought some photo frames. He likes to wear comfortable clothes and his jeans are a hand-me-down from his uncle in China. Noyce, different, unyewshewl.

Cherry, 23 / Fashion Stylist

Ciara, 25 / Works for Sportsgirl

This bubbly pair first caught my eye when I was lining up for a feed in the IKEA cafeteria. Is it just me of has the size of the Salmon portions at IKEA gone way small? Disgruntled I bought meatballs instead. Large, needless to say. To feed my ravenous hunger. Settle hunger pains, settle. Atypical of the type of shoppers you see at IKEA, I was glad these two brought some inspired clothing combinations to the otherwise bland crowd. These girls are just having a “faff” in IKEA whilst also looking to buy some ice-cream mugs. Loving the use of eclectic accessories (eg Cherry on the left is wearing a few different necklaces whilst Ciara is wearing a head band and leopard print tights) as well as a mix of textures (eg Ciara has combined wool + cotton jersey + leather Ugg boots) to add some interest to what is really a laid-back weekend wardrobe.

He might be working for ASIO people, so cut him some slack for remaining “anonymous”. Okay, so the happy jumper is from Japan and his mouth opens like a joey pouch to store your valuables. Strappy Roman sandals are from Egypt. How convenient, no chance of getting those any time soon. Everything awesome is always from overseas. What about his totally awesome 80s inspired Fro!? Oh yes. How about the metal open storage unit to his right? 100% heinous. Who want’s to see all your kitchen utensils and foodstuffs on display? Clutter much? That’s right, no one.

Georgia, 17 / VCE Student

Georgia was just standing … waiting for her Mom or Dad to drive ‘round and pick up the clothes stand that she’d bought from IKEA. Yet, she stood out from the crowd. Why? Because she’s wearing a red cardigan that brightens up her look. For Melbournians, red tends to be the most common accent colour (usually a red scarf or red shoes) and I know, it’s because we always wear black or shades of grey. Red and black just go together. Ahh, black. The fail safe choice. However, as you can see, having a punch of colour goes such a long way in wintry Melbourne! Umm, so get on to it people. Experiment with other colours too. Try orange, maybe green, or a royal blue … preferably not all at once. If you do, be careful. You want to generate a spark of “hello there stunner!”; not cause a poor child to yelp, “Mummy, look. It’s a clown!” Georgia’s favourite purchase from IKEA is a desk and some shelves for her room and the favourite thing that she’s wearing today is her hat that she bought on Brunswick Street.

… about this life is not the job we have, the car we drive, the suburb we live in or the clothes we wear (What!?). It’s the people around us (Surpise!). That brat of a brother always giving you a dead arm, that obsessive compulsive but entertaining best friend, that cheeky prankster of a boyfriend, or that strong-willed beauty of a wife. Whoever they are, these are the people and the relationships that matter. Yes, some of them are badly dressed, but hey, not everyone can have you’re sense of style you sexy minx. This is where you come in. Since you’re reading this blog, it’s clear that you’re the fashion-savvy animal in your pack of family and friends. They need you to step up and lead them out of the jungle of clashing outfits, through the maze of confusing colour combinations, and into the promised land of sophisticated cool.

Often caught snagging bargains on http://www.asos.com/, Matt refuses to wear anything last season anywhere in the world, and as a result, changes his outfit 5 times daily. Megan is at the forefront of all things fashion, with insider knowledge of all things hip and happening – and by the looks of things, double denim is back.

ENGAGED

Hannah, 25 / Law Student

Hannah: “Knowing you are going to spend the rest of your life with the one person you truly love. It also means sharing this celebratory time with friends and family, and preparing for the biggest adventure in one’s life!”

Daniel: “Knowing that you have found the love of your life and knowing that the other person will always have your back! And with God as the head of our relationship, and as we both get closer to him, so we do the same.”

MM: Daniel might wear the pants in this relationship (and sporting a nice macintosh top coat as well may I add) but it's Hannah who's stealing the show with her black feather skirt. How do you even wash that? Do you lick it clean like a cat or air it when it starts to smell like a pair of unwashed jeans after 6 months? So many questions. What I do know is this: Daniel does well by dressing strong but understated so that his beautiful fiancé can shine. Chivalry never goes out of style.

SINGLE

"Having a bit of extra time to focus on my career, along with spending time with family and friends before finding that special someone. Being able to work nights and not having to worry how that will affect a relationship."

MM: It's winter people, pull out the trench coats and knits, layer it up and play with textures. This is the time to utilize all that stuff sitting in the back of your wardrobe. Who needs heating (and as a result, astronomical gas and electricity bills) when you can just flaunt your extensive collection of cardis, jackets and scarves! Add some colour, throw on some wellies, have a go. I know what you're all thinking, "How can this stunner of man still be single?" Not for long ladies … I'll be taking applications on his behalf. Please, no naked pictures.

Lesley: “I love the fact that I get to do life with an amazing diverse group of friends; people who come from various cultural backgrounds, social interests, religions, opinions, ages, and continents. Friendship to me is about loyalty, acceptance, trust, consistency, respect, truth, love, fun and an abundance of laughs! Developing a friendship takes time and effort and I’m a firm believer in what you put in is what you’ll get out of the friendship. For me it’s not about the quantity but all about the quality of the friendship. A friend is there to share in the highs and lows of life, come alongside you to offer that much appreciated word of encouragement, or perhaps offer some honest tough love when they can see you need to pull your head back in.”

MM: Judging from the length of their responses, it's clear who is the listener and who is the jibber jabber in this friendship. Like a Duracell Bunny that just keeps on going, Lesley (holding the balloons) will talk you to sleep, and then, talk you awake again; but all whilst dazzling you with her choicest apparel. Decked out in classy monotones, Lesley shows us that it's easy being this spectacular when you mix-and-match quality pieces. Case in point: her black bolero jacket - perfect to dress up jeans and a top or to throw over a dress to give it more of a casual look. She's a thinker. A true friend who'll fight for you when you're down, Lesley is loyal till the end … unless you eat Tim Tams on her couch without using a plate, then you're just asking for it (I understand Lesley, I totally understand). Teni on the other hand, the empathetic listener and soulful gospel singer, shows us how to dress to impress for a fuller body shape. Always turning heads for all the right reasons, this girl radiates joy and beauty with bright colours and clever statement accessories. Teni's necklace is from Tilkah and her yellow jacket is a vintage op shop purchase.

Casual Friday

It’s that time of the month again – no ladies, not that time of the month – I’m talking about Casual Friday. Initial thought, “Yes!” Secondary, but lingering thought, “what the heck do I wear?!” So we all know we’re meant to wear “smart casual”, but seriously, this is possibly the most vague and confusing dress code in human existence. To Queenslanders this could mean smart shorts worn with a belt. To Sydney-siders this could mean a summer dress and sandals. However, to Melbournians, this means ditching the business shirt and tie for a soft cotton chambray shirt with a waist coat? Or girls frantically shopping to replace that structured work blouse with another blouse, but this time asymmetric, funky, and with creative understated stitches or textured detailing?

I’m not sure what your experience is with Casual Friday, but for me and my workmates, its time to show off the rest of your wardrobe. It’s time to impress. Casual Friday is meant to be “casual” – relaxed and easy. Yet the opposite is usually the case – panicked and complicated. We roll into work Friday morning sometimes unsure of our tediously put together outfit … will I get the thumbs up or the thumbs down today? You know what, take a chill pill. As long as you’re not wearing something that borders on a “wardrobe malfunction”, then in my opinion, you’re in safe territory. Everyone’s version of “Casual Friday” is different; but then again, it wouldn’t hurt if people up’d the ante a bit now and then.

What do you like to wear for Casual Friday?

It's the one day of the working week that I can wear something from the sneaker collection so I usually start getting dressed feet first. Generally speaking though, something that doesn't create too much of a stir in the office (although sometimes I think I do cross that line a little - but until I get in trouble for it I'll keep doing it!) but something that I can still go out in on a Friday night. I usually have suits in the office so if I need to see a client, I'm not wearing red shoes. [MM: Why not?] I think it's also important to remember to have spare socks. I once got changed out of my Friday casuals because I had to see a client urgently. My white socks were a good ice breaker for the meeting - but they weren't good for much else.

Girls do. Guys don't. I have never understood why guys feel the need to look like something out of a Rivers catalogue. [MM: haha!]

What should the opposite sex wear for Casual Friday?

Whatever's comfortable? Friday is really the only day you can really show some individual style.

What is your favourite item that you're wearing today? Where did you get it?

My Lunaracers and my watch. Lunaracers - from ebay from memory? Watch - while on honeymoon in the Carribeans. Duty Free shopping on the islands is unbelievable.

MM: In the corporate world, this boy is pushing the envelope. Kudos for the whole Pharrell Williams look – bright sneakers, puffa jacket, turned up plaid collar on the jeans – hang on, is this the case of another Asian guy trying to be all gangster; but in a grown up way? I think so, but with more style … I like it. Hey, its better than a Partner saying, “Oh, didn't realise it was dress like a clown day” (which apparently has happened more than once). Where is the love?

Jeans and ballet flats! Like to dress it up with flowy top and cute accessories (whether it be funky beads, scarf or jacket).

Yeah I do, especially the girls! It is a chance for us to get out of the "corporate" clothes and show off what else is in our wardrobes.

Definitely jeans. Wear it with a shirt and some nice leather shoes or t-shirt and cardi combo with some funky trainers.

Being pregnant it is all about the accessories - so probably has to be my AG Jacket and my Prada handbag. Both were purchased in the city.

MM: Being pregnant doesn’t mean it’s time to throw fashion by the way side. Sandra accommodates her beautiful bump by pairing her outfit with a jacket that sits snugly at the shoulders but is unstructured at the waist. The extra space created by the open-style jacket is filled in with a scarf which not only provides extra warmth but adds visual interest to the ensemble. Bonus.

My light grey jacket. I got it tailor made in a little town in Vietnam called Hoi Ann.

MM: Good use of layering by adding a contrasting cardigan below the jacket; totally transforms an otherwise pedestrian outfit to one that stands out. It’s all about the details … check out the subtle pocket square in his jacket and rolled up sleeves revealing the cardigan and shirt collars for extra colour contrast. Love it.

Seeing as we only get it once a month at work it is eventful. It allows people to “out” a new pair of jeans or a nice top representative of their personality. Business suits can stunt a persons ability to show their personality.

I have two favourite items, my Alannah Hill ankle boots and my Murano Glass necklace from Venice.

MM: Liking the coin ring. Nothing like wearing loose change as a fashion accessory. Short of some shrapnel for those annoying “coin only” ticket machines on trams? Fret not, I’m wearing a $2 coin! Ah ha! Move aside ticket inspectors … I’m having my cake and eating it too.

Apart from the cast (Epworth Hospital), it'd have to be the cardi which was picked up in England and have heard some describe it as "shabby chic". I am yet to determine if this was a compliment. [MM: That Frankie, what a character. I think she sees you as a male version of the Olsen twins … is that a compliment?]

MM: Broken your arm recently? Sporting a cast? Parade it with confidence! It’s telling the world, “Yes I’m active and thrill seeking! I’m full of danger and adventure!” Pity James broke his arm falling down a flight of stairs. Grandiose image of James breaking his arm whilst fighting off a pack of wolves … gone.

Yes, I think they do. It enables them to wear things a little bit more funky and edgy and not so corporate. People usually spend a lot of money on casual clothes and they don't get to show them off.

Designer jeans, preferably dark denim (not distressed or ripped) paired with a tailored jacket. Alternatively, relaxed military or preppy style trousers. Leather jacket and RM William boots and textured scarf.

What is your favourite item that you're wearing today? Where did you get it?

I'm wearing a grey cropped leather Jacket. It was purchased at Oxford. Metal grey necklace from Country Road.

MM: It appears that in Angela’s ideal world, everybody would be wearing “designer jeans”. No more cheap op shop pants or loose fitting Kmart denim thank you … give me your credit card and get ready for some gut-sucking; you know what they say about jeans, “if you can do them up, buy them!” In short, I agree. They don’t have to be “designer” per se, but make sure they fit you well. Also, I’m a big fan of the gunmetal grey leather jacket Angela is wearing … such a breath of fresh air to the ubiquitous black numbers stretched across the backs of every man and his dog riding the City Circle tram. Nothing wrong with them, but a colour change would be welcomed.

The more you take, the more you leave behind … what is it? Footsteps. It’s our little mark on this planet. As we go about our daily lives running from one appointment to another, we are leaving behind our invisible trail like human snails. Minus the sticky slimy part … and … oh, we don’t shrivel up and die when exposed to salt.

So what are you wearing when you’re leaving behind this trail? Are you trotting around in Italian calf-skin babies that cost more than your entire outfit put together or are you cruising through life in a pair of thongs. Not that there’s anything wrong with thongs may I add, well, as long as they’re Havaianas of course. If you’re going to flip flop, you might as well flip flop in the ultimate in flip flop luxury – Brazilian rubber. Am I right or am I just a sucker for a clever marketing campaign spearheaded by the glamazon that is Gisele Bundchen? No, I am just right.

I was talking to some friends about this post on shoes and was surprised by their enthusiasm to take part. Grateful. Only regret is that I didn’t get a picture of a guy with some hi-top leather boots on; you know, black or brown military boots with the laces undone and worn with skinny jeans. Hot. Stay tuned boys and girls, stay tuned.

First of all, ten points for wearing a mono tonal long top that covers a bright floral skirt except for the last few inches. It’s very peek-a-boo. It’s effective layering that draws your attention to the contrasting skirt. It’s also very “in” right now. Carrie Bradshaw parades around on the silver screen in a similar outfit – long top layered over a short pleated skirt except for the last few inches. Carrie Bradshaw tick of approval … is there any higher accolade in female fashion?

Back to the shoes. Jo is channelling an ice-skater today with her shoes that she bought online from www.asos.com. She is a also big fan of socks because they give your outfit an “extra edge” and, as an added bonus, they "give your calves greater definition when they stop at the ankle". Not to mention totally practical given the cold Melbourne winter weather. As an owner of at least 80 pairs of shoes, Jo Jo has much to say about footwear. Bridie, 27 / Youth Pastor & Events Coordinator

Brindabella could not decide which look to showcase, so – true to attention-seeking form – she brought along both looks.

Look number 1: Very fashionable black ankle boots and a black Balmain-inspired jacket. Very Melbourne winter.

Look number 2: Tan over-the-knee leather boots with a pleated scarf. Warmer colours that really compliment her lighter colouring and blonde hair.

If anything, what Bridie shows us is how a change of footwear and a few accessories can totally transform your look. Which is your favourite? Vote now!

Bridie bought her tan boots a while ago when it was fashionable to wear them with the top folded down, but she re-invented the look by unfolding the leather so that it now sits above the knee. Wow. Blondes are amazing! Basically, hold on to things long enough and they’ll come back into fashion … with a few minor adjustments.

She was initially concerned that her tan boots were “a little bit hooker”, but she is now embracing them because she hates the cold and “the more of the leg it covers the better”. Bridie bought her dress from a shop on Glenferrie Road in Hawthorn and considers her style as feminine, simple and a bit tailored. She has a knack of picking out bargains and enjoys spotting the “diamond amongst the rubble”. In fact, the black ankle boots and black jacket were both bought in Thailand for a song. Not literally. If you’ve ever heard this girl sing in Church … well, let’s just say you’d probably move seats. Luckily God doesn’t care whether we’re tone deaf. Alen, 30 / Telstra Technologist

Alen describes his style as a “fusion of retro vintage 80s and 90s with a bit of modern street”. A bit of modern street … I like the sound of that, it’s like the start of one of those poems that you find in the train carriages here in Melbourne. They call it, “Moving Melbourne Through Art”. Just move me from home to work on time and without breaking down thank you very much and I’ll be happy. Get your act together, and don’t even get me started on the myki system … how can a ticketing system cost more than it cost NASA to launch it’s latest rocket into space?! Out-freaking-rageous.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch … Alen is wearing a pair of Jordan 6s from the motor sport edition. He bought these shoes from the US thinking that they weren’t coming to Australia, but found them on Chapel Street a few weeks later at a cheaper price. Bummer. Alen loves that the shoes are a blend of motor sports and basketball (two of his favourite sports) and usually considers what shoes he’s wearing first before his outfit. However, the best thing about Alen is that he isn’t too precious about his shoes (like other fans and collectors of Air Jordans) and will actually wear them out. Good work.

Seakanyo, 28 / Quantitative Risk Analyst

Self-described “Glamazon”, Seakanyo is a true individual who reflects her creativity in the way she styles her hair, the clothes she wears, and of course … the shoes she catwalks in. Yes, catwalks. Obsessed with shoes, those who know her will testify to her ever-changing profile picture of shoes that she displays on her facebook account. Is this Melbourne’s Imelda Marcos?

This girl came prepared. Showing off 3 different types of wedges, she loves how they give you height and style without sacrificing on comfort. Apparently, a killer combination. However, Seakanyo warns that “wedges can be very chunky & heavy looking at times, so be very strategic with them”. She is pictured here wearing her Nine West "Extremely Highs" with a dramatic cork platform heel and she is holding a Steve Madden peep-toe wedge in “Cocoa Infusion”. And, may I say, loving the “teapot” pose there Seakanyo. Not looking short and stout at all. No, seriously.

Seakanyo is not only a fashionista, but also a recessionista. As a rule of thumb, she will never pay more than 30% of the retail price for a shoe, “no matter how many times you dream about it!” She is wearing a Garfunkle dress with a denim boyfriend jacket that she bought in Brussels, Belgium 5 years ago.

Aimee, 27 / Legal Personal Assistant

What I like about Aimee is that she understands the beauty of simplicity. She will wear sophisticated yet basic clothes but will then accessorise her look with quality jewellery and shoes. I mean, take a look at her shoes. They are vintage Italian snake-skin shoes embellished with a simple bow. She inherited these pumps from her mother who bought them at the top end of Collins Street in the late 1980s. She is also wearing a Dior watch and understated Tiffany & Co silverware. Given her classic look, it comes at no surprise that she loves Charlotte’s style in Sex and the City who she calls the “classiest lady in New York”. Oh please, those girls prance around New York City changing designer outfits and accessories every 2 hours whilst sipping lattes and bitching about boys … unrealistic. Did they all win lotto at the same time?

Nathan, 30 / Foreman for a construction company

30s are the new 20s that’s for sure. You’re wiser, more sophisticated and confident, and well-established in your career with money to spend (hopefully). Some may say I’m just biased because I will hitting the big three zero in a couple of years, but they’re all wrong … I’m just an optimist.

Nathan collects sneakers.* I know, I have a degree in the bloody obvious. As a kid, Nathan used to envy the “rich kids” who owned a pair of Air Jordans, but now as an adult with disposable income, he is disposing all his mullah on them. He loves collecting Air Jordans because he loves basketball, the “wicked designs”, and the fact that they are “the premium shoe of all sneakers; it’s what people were getting murdered for in the US in the 1990s”. Intense. His favourite pair are the black Infrared 6s and would like to buy the white Infrared 6s to complete his extensive collection. Avid shoe lover. Nathan describes his style as “basketball inspired 80s and 90s retro”. Hang on, are you Alen’s long lost twin brother? Birds of feather, they sure do flock together.

As in, real vintage. Stuff that you buy with loose change; from coinage found at the bottom of your gym bag, underneath sofas or from wishing wells. C'mon ... as if you've never thought about nicking a few gold coins from the bottom of those watery graves and putting them to good use. For pinball machines, movie hire or a bag of chips. No? Really? Anyway, I digress. Point is, the word "vintage" is overused these days and now even includes apparel bought from high-end shops that have been made to look vintage ... think paisley printed ties, cowboy shirts or pokadot dresses. Not cool. Or even worse, when you buy "vintage" from shops that get their stock from real op shops and then charge you a premium. Confession: I'm talking about myself here. Epic fail.

Recognising my limitations in this department, I found a few savvy and thrifty shoppers to show us their interpretation of vintage. What are their tips, where do they shop, and why do they bother rummaging through piles of crap just to find a top for $2? Is it worth it? Judging from the looks below ... the answer is yes.

Travis, 22 / Currently on holidays

Outrageous. To a full-time worker the word "holiday" usually means a 3 day weekend or 2 weeks off at the end of the year jam-packed with chaotic appointments centred around Christmas and New Years. Having 3 months off at the end of uni exams to sleep in, hang out with mates or even travel is now a foreign and distant concept. Heck, I'm happy if I can get 8 hours of sleep a night.

Anyways, Travis is on holidays. In the luxury of these long days and even longer nights, he has stumbled upon a leopard print top. Jackpot. He's been searching for this for years and has finally found it (out of all places) in his girlfriend's wardrobe. Behind every well-dressed man, is a well-dressed woman ... check out Jasmine's ensemble below. Travis' style is influenced by skateboarding (though his clothes today are not a testament to that) and advises people to really search for good pieces in op shops as "a lot of vintage stuff is just horrible". He's really pulled off the "double denim" look as well but note how the denim is not the same colour. Same colour "double denim" - now that's definitely horrible.

Laura, 20 / Retail Store Manager

This girl is wearing a kimono! How awesome, and by the looks of it, super comfortable!

Where did she buy it? Chapel St Bazaar.

What is her style? Dresses to different themes (no prizes for guessing today's theme).

When asked what's her advice to people wanting to incorporate some vintage attire into their wardrobe, Laura responded simply, "don't be afraid". So much about vintage is not caring about what other people think or say. Liberating, yes ... but easier said than done? Ever tried not caring about what other people think or say when getting dressed for work on a casual Friday? Don't. Me + bow-tie + retro glasses = "Pee Wee Herman" nickname mass emailed around the office. Scarred for life.

Laura likes to shop in Midlands, Perth for good cheap vintage clothes and reckons that "Melbourne is overrun by overpriced vintage shops trying to make vintage cool".

Jasmine, 20 / Still-life Model and Trainee Barrista

Full of life and pizazz, Jasmine is a bundle of energy who was constantly striking poses and pulling cheeky faces during her shoot ... and you can see this bubbly personality in her creative outfit. She describes her style as "semi-structured or something avant garde with some sort of pattern", but she never wears head-to-toe black. She likes to wear well-balanced texture (eg. she is wearing a satin bustier, plaid pants and a fur stole that she bought from Sally's on Smith Street) because she believes "people are very aesthetically drawn to things". Her advice is to never wear vintage pieces the way they were intended to be worn at the time, but rather, mix it with something contemporary and let your individuality shine through. In other words, don't think to yourself, "I'm going to wear vintage today" because that is not the idea. Vintage is all about individuality and creativity combined, not conforming to a particular look. Favourite places to shop for vintage include Chapel St Bazaar and Lost + Found Market, where incidentally, a picture of her is plastered over the front door.

Boris, 20 / Commerce Graduate

Boris describes his style as "Scandinavian"; that is, simple and clean. Accurate. Today he is wearing a vintage cardigan that he bought at an op shop for $2. Real op shops people ... places that exist to give people an "opportunity to buy cheap clothes", not a place set up as an "opportunity to rip you off". Man, I should know ... burned so many times.

If anything, what Boris is wearing goes to show that "vintage" doesn't mean you have to look dishevelled or "arty". His advice is to venture out to those op shops that most people don't visit and then to really look through all the racks. However, above all else, "look for crazy things and just buy them".

Lauren, 21 / Retail Assistant

Lauren's "confidence booster" is her leather bustier that she bought at an op shop in Perth, but her favourite item is the gold broach that her nanna gave her. Lovely. Looking somewhat Japanese with the skirt and knee-high socks, yet sporting a very French beige beret, Lauren is spot on when she describes her style as "feminine and occassionally random". She loves how you can express yourself with vintage pieces rather than conform to the stock standard looks shelled out by franchise brands. Basically, who needs cookie-cutters when you can shape the dough by hand. However, she admits that she can always find something to buy in any shop, whether that be Target or some boutique store. Confessions of a Shopaholic.

Lauren draws inspiration from her friend's sartorial choices and advises people to just "try it on" - clothes might look bad on the rack, but you'll get a flash of inspiration if you just give it a go. Sheesh, all that salesperson training has really seeped into her brain. Will that be pin or sign?

Jamie, 20 / Men's Shoe Store

Jamie describes her style as "undecided". Sometimes its 1950s chic, but at other times it's just "gross". Did I hear you right? Way too hard on yourself. Unless it's some new slang word for "eclectic" or something ... you crazy kids, who knows what you're all up to these days. I mean, flick on the radio and you'll hear lyrics like, "our love is a dinosaur, hear it roar"... ummm, what?!

Tangential thought aside, Jamie likes to shop at Savers because its "easy and convenient". What's also easy and convenient is raiding your grandparent's wardrobe ... not only that, its free! Jamie concurs. Her favourite item today is her slip that she bought at Savers for just $3.50 because she likes the lace trim detailing. And for the vintage newbies needing some guidance? Jamie says to "just go crazy ... if you act as though its fine, it will be fine, and people will accept it".

Camberwell Market

Every Sunday morning, between 6.00am and 12.30pm, the normally barren carpark in front of Woolworth's and Target in Camberwell Junction transforms into a bustling market. This is where you’ll find the locals spruking their old clothes, books, shoes, furniture and even witty little badges like … “Jesus loves you, everyone else thinks you’re an a**hole.” Nice. Yet strangely biblically accurate; well, the first part at least.

If you’re after cheap bargains and unique pieces, Cambie market is a good place to start. In between all the bargaining and and interesting characters – such as those crazy eager beavers that rock up at 5.30am with head torches and trawl through people’s stuff before they’ve even finished setting up their stalls and then audaciously offer 50 cents for a Ralph Lauren shirt (you’ve got to be kidding … it’ Ralph for crying out loud) – you’ll find men and women in inspiring outfit combinations.

Surrounded with so many influences, and given the fact that it’s a lazy Sunday morning, the fashions tend to be eclectic and casual rather than precise and belabored. Here’s a sample of the discerning style choices paraded by the diverse market cohort.

Bree, 20 / Student

I have to admit; I saw the Dalmatian first. It was leaping this way and that and Bree was having some difficulty keeping it under control amongst all the people trying to pat the adorable thing. It’s like a miniature cow, but cuter. However, then I noticed this stunning girl with long fiery red hair draping over her shoulders and on to her dark green dress. Red heads should always wear green … such an awesome colour combination. Had to take a picture.

Bree is currently studying Fashion Design at the Melbourne School of Fashion and has been coming to Cambie market every weekend since she was little. Her all-time favourite purchase from the market is a 1950s inspired dress that she picked up for $20, and in fact, everything she is wearing today was purchased from the market except the stockings (wise, no one likes skin diseases). Her advice to market newbies is to come early as all the good stuff goes quickly, and she says jokingly, “don’t bring your puppy ‘cos everyone wants to have a little play with it”. Poor miniature cow has to stay at home? Surely not.

Anne-Louise, 49 / Barrister

To get the most out of Cambie market, you need a keen eye for fashion gold and an ability to put together different pieces to create a great ensemble. I like how Anne-Louise has accessorised her layered look with quirky earrings, bangles, retro-styled glasses and a Gatsby hat. Anyone can go out and drop hundreds of dollars on a designer dress or suit, but can they theme together abstract pieces of clothing to make it work? That’s real style.

Anne-Louise visits the market on most Sundays and her favourite purchase is an antique English carpet bag that she bought for a bargain $70. She is wearing a pinafore from France, sunglasses from LA Eyewear and her shoes are handmade from a shop near Malvern station. Her classic Macintosh jacket was bought at the market and she advices shoppers to “be discerning” with their purchases. That’s right, don’t let someones else’s trash also be your trash.

Francisco, 18 / Year 12 student

Every now and then you’ll find someone at the market who has no interest in finding that elusive wearable vintage piece, but rather, is there merely to enjoy the atmosphere. Meet Francisco. Disarmingly frank about why he’s at the market, “my girlfriend lives around the corner” and his style, “I don’t really care about fashion”, Francisco once bought a video camera from Cambie market but later discovered that it was broken. All things don’t always end well after all. He is wearing a jacket that his mum found, he stole the shirt from his ex-girlfriend’s step dad, his pants belong to his best friend, and he bought the boots out of necessity. Francisco advises guys not to care too much about what they wear or otherwise they’ll seem too self-absorbed. Fair enough. Nothing screams “who cares” than carrying a standard-issue black nylon laptop bag. Stuff fashion - who needs it! Yet, isn’t it interesting that some people try to achieve Francisco’s care-free attitude and look? How ironic.

Alex, 22 / Customer Service Call Centre

I was on the phone chatting with my cousin when Alex walked past. I cut the conversation short, hung up, and proceeded to stop this young lady. Her male friend with her at the time (who might have been her brother?) was immediately suspicious that I was trying to pick Alex up – when I asked Alex whether I could ask her a few questions, he joked whether my first question was, “Do you have a boyfriend?”. So protective. Good quality.

Alex used to come to Cambie market all the time, but took a break, and is now only returning to this local haunt. All in all, she has been visiting the market for some 10 or 12 years and has too many favourite purchases to single out any particular item. Case in point: everything that she is wearing today is from the market. Her advice to market-goers is to bargain and to look out for stuff on the ground as there might be “little treasures in other people’s trash”. She would like to think that her style is unique and funky but wouldn’t really dare to give herself that compliment. Alex, you are totally accurate with your description.

Saori, 25 / Waitress

First time visitor to Cambie market, Saori has only been in Melbourne for a few weeks but heard about the market from a friend. Someone’s very much in the know; you won’t find Cambie market in the Lonely Planet that's for sure. She heralds from Japan (goodness, the Japanese have such a great sense of fashion) and likes to mix cheap items with big brand names. Note: she’s wearing a fur vest with ugg boots. These sheepskin kicks are everywhere at the moment – you might recall Chris wearing them in the post “Bang Bang Baby”, but that was more luck than style. However, with Saori, you can tell that she loves to experiment and isn’t afraid to try out new combinations. Fortune favours the brave they say … whoever came up with that has obviously never seen people wearing ugg boots at the beach. What the heck? There’s sand at the beach people … sand!

Felix, 27 / Student

Slightly disappointed that I didn’t have the gumption to ask Felix for a single shot of just him after he asked to be photographed with his mates. You can’t fully see the extent of this guy’s wardrobe (he’s the one wearing tan when everyone else is wearing black). However, having said that, I love how the shot shows the spirit of the market – good friends spending a crisp morning together catching up on the week whilst buying or selling clothes and sipping on a hot latte. Hungry? No worries, caravan kitchens parked around the market serve up gourmet sausages and hot jam donuts.

Felix is selling off a bundle of his stuff as he is heading over to the UK. His best purchase from the market is a pair of shoes that he nabbed for $15 a couple of years ago, and he encourages people to take chances with fashion and use it as a form of self-expression. He also advises guys to not take it too seriously and be open to fresh ideas. After all, if it doesn’t go well you can always set up a store like Felix and his mates and sell it off at Cambie market for a tidy little sum.

We all know that our confidence should not be based on what we wear, but having said that, everyone has that favourite piece of clothing - whether that be a top, jacket, dress, skirt, or whatever - which makes them feel super confident. So what is it? What do you pull out of the wardrobe or pick up from the floor when you want to look your best? What do you intentionally wash, dry, iron and wear just to impress others? Guys, is it that t-shirt that makes you look extra buff? Ladies, is it that dress that makes you look that little bit skinnier? What is your fail-proof "confidence booster"?

I gathered some friends over a lazy Saturday morning brunch for the sole purpose of capturing their "confidence boosters". Why? Because we all hate leaving the house, looking good and feeling confident, and then seeing no one of importance the entire day ... what a waste! May this devastating situation of not been appreciated for the clothes we're wearing never happen again. Check out these attention-seekers (fondly abbreviated as "A.S.") as they enjoy their turn in the spotlight.

Mike, 21 / Graphic Designer

Now we're talking. This boy knows how to dress to impress, and with that killer blue steel pout, he' s obviously Zoolander trained. His confidence boosters are his Alphaville chinos with the rolled-up hems because they're comfortable, his vintage brown brogues that he bought in Windsor 'cos it completes his look and it "never fails", and lastly, his pompadour styled hair because it expresses his individuality. Mike likes to shop at Incu and Somewhere (located above Marais in the Royal Arcade between Little Collins St and Bourke St, City) and considers his style to be always changing and incorporating different looks; somewhat of a chameleon. May I just say at this point, I'm sick and tired of people coming up to me and asking, "Hey, I've met you before, you're Mike aren't you?" No, I'm not. People, not all Asians look the same. Also, I'm not as eclectic as Mikey - he pulls off things that I never could. Like all graphic designers, Mike has a keen eye for style and design. Check out his work at http://www.mikenguyen.info/. Niva, 24 / Lawyer

This lady is looking radiant in her Little Black Dress that she bought at Review and heart-shaped Murano glass necklace that she picked up whilst in Venice, Italy. She loves her LBD because it is "simple and elegant" and she can wear it by itself or with accessories. Niva describes her style as "bold and feminine" and likes to buy clothes from Zara because they are well-tailored and trendy. Her tip for young players is to "never get dressed in the dark". Sound advice boys and girls. I've seen this woman at work on many Monday mornings, when the hazards from the weekend are still wearing off and she clearly hasn't bothered to turn on the lights before getting dressed that day, parading the most "interesting" outfits. Let's just say, hobbling down the hallway in 2 different coloured heels is not classy. It's very Ke$ha.

Jessica, 21 / Assistant Project Manager

"I only wear 100% silk", says Jess. Yet, ironically, she isn't wearing any silk today. Dolled up in a woollen Roy dress (what happened to Roy? They had such awesome low-cut jeans and now they've gone south) and Italian-made Viktor & Rolf ankle boots that she bought on sale at Arthur Galan, this girl likes quality. He bangle is from Dinosaur Designs and she's all for wearing cow, with her gloves and purse made out of kid leather. Jess likes to buy her dresses from Dana in Armadale and considers her style as "casual trying to be feminine" which usually involves "mixing quality pieces with basics". Good on you. Her confidence booster is her boots because they "make you look tall and sexy". Okay, so she didn't say that, but some annoying pest to my left did as I was asking Jess this question over brunch. Wait your turn Luke ... so A.S. However, I've painted a skewed image of this girl. Yes, she has good taste and likes pretty things, but behind all the clothes and accessories, she's a down-to-earth self-confessed tomboy with a zest for life. Love life and live it.

Luke, 22 / Young Adults & Events Coordinator

The only person to bring more than one outfit to brunch, this guy really wanted to look good for this post. Success. Well, you'd hope so - we only sussed out 4 different locations before he was happy. What? Did someone say "high-maintenance"? Luke considers his style as "clean cut with a bit of quirk" and he likes to shop at the Windsor end of Chapel St or in the op shops of Richmond and Collingwood. His confidence boosters today are his blazer because it looks sharp and he can dress it up or down, and his American Apparel grey hoody because it's comfortable and can be worn with anything. Luke has been known to steal shirts from his younger sister's wardrobe (yes, younger sister) and reckons that his photo is "going to make [Musing Mutley] famous". Oh really? Secretly, I reckon he wants to be an international male model on the catwalks of Paris and Milan. Somehow though, I see him on the back pages of a Best & Less catalogue. Don't knock it, they pay good coin.

Candace, 26 / Visual Merchandiser & Image Consultant

As an image consultant, Candace knows all about dressing for yourself and advises her clients to wear clothes which make them feel confident rather than copying what another person is wearing or following the latest fashion trends. She describes her style as classy, feminine and contemporary ... but conservative. Candace likes to wear flowing pieces to accentuate her curly hair, and if she ever wants to make a statement, she'll wear big earrings and confident heels. In fact, her confidence booster is her heels that she bought in Rio de Janiero because they are different and nothing like what she's seen before. Um, what's so different about your shoes Candace ... they look pretty normal to me. Yup, that was my initial response until I realised that we took a picture of them with her jeans covering the unique ankle-strap! Uh oh ... talk about an "awkward turtle" moment. Candace, did I mention that you're hair looks especially lovely today? No? Okay, moving right along.

Megan, 22 / Fashion Illustrator

Never afraid to wear bright colours regardless of the season, Megan describes her style as "creative streamline but feminine", which she explains as definitely not the artistic dirty hair look. She draws her fashion inspirations from blogs (and incidentally has her own blog called "Miss Artsnoob"), colours, and having an open wardrobe - she likes to see all her clothes before putting together an outfit around a certain item or experimenting with different combinations. Her confidence booster is her colour coordination because she enjoys finding colours that work well together ... even if clothes don't look good by themselves, the colour combination makes them look good. Nice. If you're going to follow in Megsy's footsteps, a word of warning ... although colourful, stay away from incorporating "Australiana" clothing into your ensemble. Knitted jumpers in sky blue featuring a rabid looking koala chewing lime green eucalyptus leaves may be okay for Kath & Kim, but wear one of those gum nut gems and you'll be turfed to the barren lands of "Are-you-blind-you-fashion-disaster". Local residents include Bjork and many footballer's wives. Once there, you're reputation may never recover. Choose wisely.

In his best-selling book entitled "Wild At Heart", author John Eldredge states that at the heart of every man, indeed that the very design of man itself, is strength and adventure. Is this why we love watching "Man vs Wild"? You see host Bear Grylls sleeping in the carcass of a dead camel for warmth, constructing rafts out of drift wood, and eating literally anything with its back turned towards the sun ... and then some. This man is wild. However, strength and masculinity is more than eating a live snake or starting a fire from scratch. After all, you can start a fight and still be a coward. True strength is taking a stand. Standing up for what is right, standing up for what you believe in, standing up for the truth.

Ezra, 23 / Store Manager

MM: Ezra moved over from Perth recently but already has the Melbourne look down pat - layered clothes and a black leather jacket over skinny jeans. Good work. If anything, have a go with what you're wearing. Sure you won't always get it right but you'll have fun in the process, and most importantly, other people get to have a laugh. Who doesn't enjoy a good laugh ... I mean, the best thing about out-of-towners is leading them astray. Try this at home: when asked what will be big this season for men's fashion, tell them with a straight face, "man leggings". Guaranteed hilarity.

Peter, 22 / High School Worker

"I choose to serve Him no matter the cost, no matter how far it takes me, and no matter how hard it gets. He is always faithful, so my life will be too!"

MM: Another out-of-towner. Pete was originally from Sydney, but he saw the light this year and decided to move to Melbourne (aka the "culture capital", the "sports capital", the "arts capital", and the "where-everything-is-awesome capital"). Undoubtedly a step up in life. The move has already affected his dress sense. Case in point: he's rolled up the cuffs of his pants. Suave. Some people say Pete looks like Robert Pattinson from the Twilight series. Sure, if you look at him from 500 metres away on a foggy day whilst squinting your eyes. Oh yes, I see it.

Ralph, 20 / Video Editor

"God is awesome because He is so unconditionally in love with me even though I don't deserve it. He gives me everything I need even if I don't ask for it, but He also gives me what I want ... sometimes. God is awesome 'cos He just is."

MM: Thank you for wearing a bow-tie Ralphie. It's about time guys pulled out the ol' bow-tie and gave it the light of day. Old school charm thrown together with casual jeans. Mix and match. Just don't mix and match a bow-tie with a singlet or any piece of swimwear. That's going way too far. We'll leave that to Lady Gaga and her little monsters.

Tim, 25 / Sales & Marketing

"God is awesome because He lets me watch Gossip Girl."

MM: What a joker ... and a prolific junk-email sender. Tim was initially reluctant to get his photo taken because he told me, "I don't want to be famous." Please, as if. Anyway, after I told him that New Yorkers in the Upper East Side have photo shoots on a regular basis (just like those Gossip Girl characters), he was sold. Hook, line and sinker ... xoxo. Although Tim is just wearing a t-shirt and a pair of jeans here, it's a well-cut and well-fitted t-shirt and jeans. When going basic it's all about the fit.

Steve, 26 / Chartered Accountant

"He has no limits, His plans for me go beyond my desires, fears and imagination; all for good and for His glory."

MM: This guy is a character. Really truly, truly really? Um, yes. Known for his random sayings but loved for his loyalty, this one's a keeper. What can we learn from what Steve is wearing? Rolling up the sleeves of your shirt always improves the look of your outfit. For. Sure.

Nathan, 22 / Student

"Because God is awesome I can be free to be all I can. I have no fear of tomorrow, and trust in His awesome power."

MM: In short, Nathan could double as a Country Road model. He wears quality basics that look good in any combination. That's the thing about having good basics, they always work. Nathan shows us that looking good starts with having the right essential items. So if you don't have the staple raw-denim jeans, basic grey or dark tee, leather desert boots or a woollen pea coat in your wardrobe, then you can forget about those camouflage print pants (who you hiding from?) or that blindingly gold puffa jacket (Ali G has come and gone people) that you had your eyes on. Stock up on the necessities and you can't go wrong.

There is forgiveness for the past, strength for today, and hope for tomorrow.

We’re no longer just existing, but living each day with purpose. It’s not a promise that everything will come up roses, but rather, it’s a secure peace knowing that God is always in control. It’s walking by faith and not by sight. It’s comprehending the enormity of the fact that God Almighty – the creator of the universe – sent His only Son to die on the Cross for each and everyone of us. You and me. To pay the price for our sins. When we didn’t deserve it. While we were still sinners. All so that God could be our best friend. So that He could be … Your Confidant. Your Savior. Your Father. Why? Simply because He loves us. Simply because God is awesome.

I grabbed some people after an “Ignite” youth meeting at Bridge Church to capture their style and to ask them why God is awesome. Here’s a sample of youthful Melbourne fashion and an insight into what makes young Christians tick.

Deborah, 22 / Registered Nurse

“God is awesome because He has plans for your life and they are always so much better than your own.”

MM: This girl is multi-talented: she can nurse your wounds, cook you a feast, and dance you tired … all whilst wearing those galaxy tights. Not one to take herself too seriously, Deb has nailed the fun-loving festival look to a tee.

Gwynfryn, 21 / Student

“I can rest in peace knowing that He is greater than any other force and I’m His daughter.”

MM: What a stand-out dress. Gwyn knows how to use colour and is a natural in front of the camera. A short chat with this lady and you’ll soon discover that she’s a thinker. Wealth of knowledge.

Jessica, 20 / Retail Assistant

“A life without love, what is that? God is awesome because He has shown me how to love and be loved. Love is all you need.”

MM: Could you get any more Melbournian than this? Clean, layered and understated clothes in black. Don’t you know that creative people wear black? In Melbourne there is no such thing as the “new black”. It’s always black on black on black. It’s what we do, deal with it. Don’t like it – move to Sydney.

Robyn, 27 / Scientist

“He loves me even when I don’t deserve it. He loves the angry me, the sad me, the happy me … He just loves me.”

MM: It’s impossible to be in a bad mood after talking to Robyn. Full of laughs and great stories, this girl will have you in stitches. Between the banter, pay attention to her style … inspired and continually changing.

Lynsey, 24 / Kindergarten Teacher

“Without Him I wouln’t have the joy of living as I do now, the peace to know that everything will be alright, the strength to face life when it isn’t all that fine and dandy. God is awesome because He loves me for who I am!”

MM: Stylish and dependable. Lynsey is just as renowned for getting things done well and done correctly around church as she is for sourcing a great piece of clothing from some random shop in Asia. Consistency is her trademark.

Simply the must-have fashion item for the season.

Have you met Bang Bang Baby? A cute Asian toddler, wearing a hard hat and toting a toy gun, is plastered over a white American Apparel singlet constructed out of luxe 100% cotton jersey. Relaxed boho chic has reached a new level of cool. Born out of the tropical rainforests of Malaysia and hand-crafted in the underground design circles of Melbourne, this limited edition and limited release singlet has taken the fashion scene by storm.

"Where do I get one?!", I hear you bellow. Well, it is worn by those in the know but it is not available at any boutique or online store. In fact, with only 10 of these wild childs on the planet you simply can't get more exclusive than this! My advice to you: find someone wearing Baby and pay them for it there and then. These hot cakes are worth their weight in gold!

Move aside Ed Hardy, eat your heart your Dolce & Gabbana, Bang Bang Baby has arrived and is taking no prisoners.

Aimee, 27 / Legal Personal Assistant

This good-intentioned but misdirected child was previously wearing brand names like Gucci and Prada. So 2000 and late. However, his street cred sky-rocketed when he laid his hands on Bang Bang Baby. Pey-Li, 27 / Assistant Youth Pastor

Creative powerhouse, rockstar wannabe and "melodica" player (that random blue keyboard instrument), Pey-Li is anything but a conformist. She credits the stylistic versatility of Bang Bang Baby as the reason why she wears this little beauty everywhere and with everything. Frankly she admits, "life without Baby would be a black hole". That is, a void, a dark sucking emptiness that reaches inside your very being and screams, "I'm hungry for some worthy self-expression and unpretentious fashion!" Really ... well I'm hungry for some roast chicken and freshly made coleslaw. And no, I don't want your grease-saturated fries with that. Anyway, I digress. This eclectic fashionista loves how each piece of clothing tells a different part of your own story; how each piece is a conversation starter. So what does Bang Bang Baby say about her? A love for the 1980s when Baby was born - a decade marked by great music, outlandish fashion and the very best of all things plastic ... holograms. Absolutely premium.

Men, it’s time to step up

Hunting around the office for some well-dressed workmates to feature in "Respecting Your Colleagues" uncovered more ladies than men. Why is that? Maybe it’s because our female counterparts have more options than men when it comes to “acceptable” workplace attire. Maybe it’s because guys think that wearing a suit, shirt and tie is already making an effort and there’s no room for creativity. Whatever the reason, it’s time for the guys to step it up.

It’s all about the details:

- A well-tailored suit

Just about every suit off the rack needs a few alterations before you can whack it on and parade it around the office. Whether it’d be taking up the jacket sleeves to show a 1/3rd of your underlying shirt cuff, taking up the pant length to ensure it only breaks once, or taking in the jacket so you don’t look like Sponge Bob Square Pants, the alterations are small but make a massive difference on the overall look of the suit.

- Slim-fitted shirt

At some time during the course of the day the suit jacket is going to come off, so make sure you’re wearing a slim-fitted shirt and not a billowing tent-like ensemble. Not only is a “tent-y” shirt unflattering to your body shape, but the extra shirt material creases under a suit and makes you look disheveled – or worse, that you’re wearing the same shirt from yesterday.

- Simple embellishments

Try a slim dark tie, a subtle pocket square, a classic silver tie-bar, or smart cufflinks (not necessarily all at the same time). If you’re wearing a grey or navy suit, throw on a pair of brown shoes for a change. Finish it off with an understated analog watch.

Throw away any ties with cartoon prints (what were you thinking?) and chunky sports watches that could double as paper weights (water resistant up to 50 metres … who needs that?).

Yes, it’s true that men don’t have much room to move when it comes to corporate attire, but with whatever little we do have, let's make it look sharp and smart. People are watching.

Respecting Your Colleagues

You’re at work 5 days a week, so the very least you could do is respect your colleagues by wearing clothes that make you look good. It’s bad enough that we spend most of our waking hours in a confined and air-recycled office, let’s not make the situation worse by boring each other with bland and uninspired “uniforms”. Enough of those box-y and shapeless suits and shirts. We might be drones in a corporate rat race, but let’s not look like homogenous robots. Let’s start wearing clothes that not only fit well but are pleasing to the eye; clothes that make us feel confident but still appropriate for the workplace. It’s all about expressing yourself with what you wear, yet not over-stepping the line and attracting attention for all the wrong reasons. Image and perception is everything in the corporate world … so dress the part, push that fashion envelope, but keep it tasteful and professional.

I went scouting around a corporate law firm to nab some savvy dressers and to discover what their thoughts were when it came to fashion in the workplace. Here’s an inside look at some discerning style choices in the context of a traditionally conservative profession.

Ena, 26 / Lawyer

Classy. Ena knows how to make a statement with her clothes without being loud and garish. She exudes an engaging self-confidence which is evident in her statuesque and strong pose – this girl knows her best angles and isn’t being afraid to work it. Bravo. She believes that ladies should opt for feminine and elegant pieces in the workplace, such as sheer and soft blouses instead of structured business shirts, because ladies shouldn’t dress and look like men in such a male-dominated industry. Her favourite item is her high-waisted skirt that she bought at Ojay and she also likes to shop at Review and Veronika Maine. Ena admires her mother’s sense of style and predicts that dark grey or maroon stockings with subtle embellishments will be a big hit for work this winter.

Malcolm, 28 / Lawyer

Malcolm appreciates quality and this is reflected in his stylish sartorial choices. He chooses shirts made with a high thread count Egyptian cotton and suits constructed out of a high thread count merino wool. Yes, he’s precious … but don’t hate on him just because he appreciates the finer details. At least this guy knows what he likes and stands by it. 10 points and gold star. Malcolm is influenced by traditional London styling and advocates for more colour in the workplace – whether that be a bright shirt-and-tie combination or a prominent pin-striped suit. His favourite accessories are his Tiffany cufflinks because they are “simple and elegant and go with any of my French cuff shirts”. Of course.

Kelly-Marie, 29 / Legal Adviser

What is with the Brits and their inherent sense of wit? You’d be hard-pressed to find a more sarcastically hilarious and friendly person than Kelly-Marie. Besides her good sense of humour, she is also a smart dresser and knows how to brighten up an office with carefully selected statement-making accessories and shoes. Her favourite item today, or “confidence booster”, is her necklace that she bought at Selfridges in London because it’s different and attracts attention. She keeps an eye on the UK trends (through regular updates from her best friend Jules in Scotland) and normally buys her clothes online because she considers Australian fashion to be expensive. Too right, we get ripped-off big time. Kelly-Marie appreciates the way Cameron Diaz pulls off the chic “girl-next-door” look without going over the top, thinks that Melbournians should inject some colour into their otherwise black wardrobe, and enjoys a bit of retail therapy for effective stress relief. Ah … if only we had the money to buy all that we wanted. Is that called “greed”?

Frances, 23 / Lawyer

Frances is always immaculately dressed. Always. Every now and then I’ll hear someone ask, “Have you seen Fran’s shoes today?” or “Did you see Fran’s top?”, and before you know it, others have followed suit and gone out and bought that very same top or pair of shoes. Massive influence. Fran considers her style as structured and demure and often makes an overseas pilgrimage (usually Kuala Lumpur or Hong Kong) to stock up on clothes for the year. She doesn’t like to over accessorise but does like to dab on a fiery rouge lipstick. Her confidence booster is her Burberry pumps that she bought in Hong Kong because they are timeless, and she loves how “clothes can give people the illusion that you’re a different type of person”. In the workplace, she would like to see more guys wearing slimmer pants and glasses (I totally agree), and for the gals, backseam stockings and … wait for it … red lipstick. If you’re wondering, and I know you are, the bag she’s carrying is Yves Saint Laurent.

Chris, 27 / Lawyer

Self-titled “reluctant style icon”, Chris jokes that he is blessed with “rugged good looks and raffish charm”. If by “raffish” he means “unconventional”, then he’s on the money. Check out his Harrods bag. It’s actually a hand-me-down from his grandmother and is about 25 years old. This is a “man bag” with a difference. He actually carries this vintage bag on to the train, through the city streets, and into the office every day of the week … but it works! It shows off his quirky side and only someone like him could pull it off. True style is unashamedly personal and I love how Chris just totes his bag around the “hard-nosed legal fraternity” (as he cheekily calls it) without paying attention to the raised eyebrows.

Jacqui, 26 / Lawyer

Is it the clothes that make Jacqui look good or vice versa? As a mutual friend once said, “you could put Jacqui in a hessian sack and she’ll still look good”. Hmmm … questionable. However, what is not questionable is this girl’s fun-loving and adventurous sense of style. Willing to test the waters and embrace new looks, Jacqui correctly states that her fashion choices are influenced by what she sees people wearing on the streets, friends, magazines, prevailing trends and her unique sense of style. She likes to shop at designer boutiques for statement pieces and “cheap Asian shops for bargains”, and would like to see more workers using corporate attire as a means of self-expression rather than a uniform to hide behind. Her favourite item is her skirt that she bought at Ladakh because of the pocket detailing and chiffon bow.

Sunday Best

Wearing your “Sunday best” no longer means wearing something tired and uneventful, but rather it has evolved to a well thought out ensemble of details.

To celebrate the knack of churchies throwing together a great outfit, 5 people were selected after a Sunday morning service at Bridge Church to talk about their choice of clothes and how it reflects upon them as Christians. Photos were taken by the legend that is Sayher Heffernan.

Daniel, 28 / Architect

Standing out in the church crowd after a Sunday morning service is no easy task with the rush of bodies flowing out of the auditorium and the white noise of chatter in the air, but that is exactly what Daniel did. There’s something about the understated masculinity in his beard and the clean but sharp shirt-and-tie combination that grabs your attention. More guys should rock out the facial hair … definitely. He describes his style as “classic” and his favourite item (aka “confidence booster”) are his black leather loafers that he bought in Europe. Rather than shopping at a particular shop or staying loyal to a particular brand, Daniel buys clothes that catches his eye or appeals to him because of the “shape”. However, he believes that good style is all about how you wear your clothes rather than the clothes you wear. Spot on.

Rumbi, 45 / Nurse

How stunning is Rumbi’s pumpkin dress – it compliments her darker complexion and hits you square between the eyes. Also, as she has an infectious laughter and cheerful disposition, she’s done a great job of dressing to reflect her internal beauty. Rumbi classifies her style as smart casual and chooses clothes that make her feel happy and comfortable. Her favourite item is her Laura Ashley dress and she often shops at Myer. When asked what inspires her wardrobe choices, she responds poignantly, “I think, how will this make me present in front of the King of Kings?” Awesome.

Grant, 25 / Senator’s Office

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Grant dressed badly. Maybe it’s because he has that “creative slash eclectic” look going on and whatever he throws on, whether it’d be from your local op shop or an overseas street market, it always looks good. His girlfriend says that he makes good clothes look bad … I think he makes bad clothes look good. Grant considers his style as “dressed up with a lot of collars”. His confidence boosters today are his shoes that be bought in Vietnam and his faux leather jacket that he bought in Thailand. He buys most of his clothes from overseas and encourages everyone to dress for themselves and to not care about what others say. However, Grant admits that whenever his mom comments that an outfit looks “awful” then it’s confirmation he’s wearing the right thing.

Bethel, 27 / Recent Graduate

Deborah, 20 / Retail Assistant

These stunning sisters dress with sass and attitude. Sometimes they dress for comfort, sometimes to attract attention, but always carried off with conviction. The way someone carries themselves has such a massive impact on how they appear; and with these two, their inner confidence and positive personality is attractive. Bethel, with her crazy afro, usually loves to wear bright colours (especially yellow) whilst Deborah ops for feminine clothes with muted earthy tones. Both of these girls have great hair but Deborah’s favourite item is her top that she bought in Thailand for $2. Bethel shops anywhere except malls whilst Deborah doesn’t mind General Pants Co or the odd Asian shop with great bargains. When asked what is their inspiration for dressing up for Church, Bethel said she wanted to look good for Christ but Deborah responded, “Dress to impress ‘cos you never know when you’re going to meet your husband”. She chimes in later that she was joking … apparently.

Winter Trends

After speaking to a few fashionistas around church, I’ve compiled a select list of what they predict will be big this winter season.

Boys

- shawl-neck knitted cardigans
- cropped duffle coats
- rugged leather boots worn with laces untied and slim fitting jeans / pants
- pompadour hair (short on the side and back but long on top)

Girls

- ankle leather boots with a clean unembellished aesthetic (zips rather than laces) worn with black tights
- studded detailing

- belts over jackets and cardigans

- Balmain-inspired jackets (that is, accentuated but tailored shoulders). Big in Europe last year, but only hitting our streets this winter.
